The Fall of Saigon was the final and visual proof that the U.S. mission had failed. Operation Frequent Wind was a desperate, last-minute helicopter evacuation of Americans and at-risk South Vietnamese allies as North Vietnamese tanks closed in on the capital. These final days were marked by a sense of tragic abandonment; despite decades of effort, the U.S. was forced to flee from a rooftop, leaving thousands of loyal allies behind. When the tanks crashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace, it marked the end of the Republic of Vietnam and the complete unification of the country under Communism.

Watching the footage of the Fall of Saigon was the most difficult moment for my grandfather. The lives of the friends he had lost had been for nothing. It was the final seal of his survivor’s guilt; he had survived the war, but the hours of work he did couldn't save his friends.
